Well,.....my project has appeared to hit a major snag. I'm currently trying to install 2.76 gears and new everything else into a 8.25 diff. So far I have installed and removed my gears 36 times as I cannot get a proper ring gear pattern. The 2.76 gears are difficult to get as there's not a lot of demand for that ratio. I had found one company that had one set left so I ordered them. I've had every possible combination of shim under the pinion bearing and can't bring the required pattern any where near where it's supposed to be. It would appear that the cut on the gears themselves are the only reason why the won't come in to spec. Anybody else had a similar problem??

What carrier are you using? I think there are two different carriers for the 8 1/4 based on the gears

There are 2 different carriers. IIRC, 2.76 and higher (numerically lower) uses one, and 3.23 and lower (higher number) a different carrier. Moot point in this case but 2.91, not sure which it uses.
Trying to put 2.76 on a 3.23 carrier will never work, and vice versa.
Keep in mind, the above is from a slightly fuzzy memory, so take it for what it's worth, lol.

I think the split was lower then that, that 2.76 and higher were the same. But I haven't messed with that stuff in ages.

You are correct, I was not. Checked my fuzzier than I thought memory. It's 2.54 and numerically lower use one carrier, 2.76 and numerically higher use the other.

Prowler, disregard my previous post.

New Yukon carrier. Correct for ratio as well. I had bought the set up bearings so that has helped with all the set ups and tear downs. I have gone from zero shims up to 60 thou and can't move the pinion contact point off the top of the ring gear heel drive side towards the middle on the ring gear in any kind of useable pattern. I have also read about gears being a 2 cut apposed to 5 cut. I though about taking it to diff shop but as far as I'm concerned, they're going to charge me a couple hundred bucks and end up saying,... this is as close as we can get it. This isn't really a difficult job but I'm sure the outfit I got the gears from is going to insinuate that I'm doing something right and since this was the only set they had, I'm probably going to have to buy another gear package.

I have not seen any 2.94's. Most of the gear manufact's start in the 3.0 something. I had thought about the 2.94's as well but just couldn't find any !! Prices seem to float all over as well. The gears I bought were from what I'd call an off brand but I never anticipated that I'd get a set that wouldn't pattern properly.
