Chrysler New yorker...

During those years, the 5th Ave (rear wheel drive) was the M-body, the regular New Yorker (front-wheel drive) was an E-platform car (K-car). Is what you are referring to front wheel drive?

I concur....not an M.
The 1982 New Yorker was the only M version
In 83 it became the Fifth Ave edition.

M - Body*(1977 to 1989)

* 1977 to 1989 Dodge Diplomat
* 1977 to 1981 Chrysler LeBaron
* 1977 to 1981 Plymouth Caravelle (Canada)
* 1982 to 1989 Plymouth Gran Fury
* 1982 Chrysler New Yorker
* 1983 Chrysler New Yorker 5th Avenue
* 1984 to 1989 Chrysler 5th Avenue

The last rear-drive New Yorker was an '83. The '79-'81 New Yorker was built on the R-body platform, which mechanically is virtually the same car as a '73 Charger. The name moved to the M-body platform for '82. The '82s were available in either base or Fifth Avenue trim options. The '83 rear-drive versions were all labeled "New Yorker Fifth Avenue" since there was also a K-based (E-body) New Yorker front-wheel-drive in that year. For '84, the "New Yorker" name was dropped from the rear-drive Fifth Avenue and was used only on the econobox. Prior to 1982, the Chrysler M-platform cars were LeBarons; '82 & later LeBarons were all K-based front-drivers until the dawn of the LH cars for the '93 model year.

Interesting trivia: The New Yorker name was first used in 1939 and was the longest-running American car nameplate upon it's cancellation at the end of the 1996 model year.

...and Chrysler had a 350 9 years prior to Chevrolet. Realizing their mistake, Chrysler quickly realized a bad idea does not bear further development. :icon_biggrin:
