I always put the tapered end at the tranny and the larger at the diffy .

That's wrong.... The tapered end is ALWAYS at the diff. .


Let me throw shorty a curveball...my old one was tapered down on both ends


If both ends are tapered the longer taper is at the diff.

If both ends are exactly the same amount of taper and you removed the slip, then pick an end and have your local driveline shop re-balance it

I see what your saying Eric . The only reason I can see why they did that was because of interferance issues with the pinion snubber .


Cost and rpm, cheaper to use smaller weld yokes and the swedge tube at larger diameter to handle the rpm the shaft will see.
Detroit though did some strange shafts with some being swedged at both ends and using 2 different weld yokes.
Also weight can be saved but they weren't looking for the mpg the govt wants now
