Fuel mixture will effect temps more than timing will...the quicker you can remove heat from combustion chamber the more timing you can run.. ( or the higher the octane of fuel as it it harder to ignite. contrary to popular belief the premium fuel doesnt give you more "bang", the actual definition of octane rating is the RESISTANCE to combustion..so premium is actually harder to ignite than regular),this is why you can usually run 1 point higher compression with aluminium heads over cast heads on the same octane levels..the aluminium removes heat faster..the ping you hear is 2 flame fronts crashing into each other or in trade speak uncontrolled flame propagation..the second flame front is started from to much compression for the octane level( or too much timing allowing the fuel to ignite from compression on one side of the chamber before the plug fires igniting the mixture from the other side of the chamber) or a hot spot in the chamber igniting the mixture before the spark plug ignites the rest of the mixture resulting in the uncontrolled flame propagation
