Hi

I have a 1976 Plymouth Volare with a stock 225ci slant six engine and a "not machined" head. I wanted to replace the valve stem seals as the car was smoking bad on start. I bought a set (of 12) of qualcast 38-253-45 viton seal from rockauto which were said to be umbrella type intake and exhaust seals (on rockauto and in qualcast's e-catalog). But they look like positive type seals. See photo:

(the blue one, the black one is the old intake seal just for size comparison - the blue one fits inside of it...)

The old, brittle, hard plastic seals look like umbrella type and the intake (taller) seal has a much bigger base OD (0.9 inch)

I went to install the new viton ones, but while they slid on the stem (3/8") easily, it took a lot of force to make them go on the
valve guide OD (the head is not machined for positive type seals). They seem stretched and they look like they are about to pop off.

Are they installed correctly? Is this how they are supposed to look?

I looked online but couldn't find a modern replacement for intake seals. Fel-pro has the SS12764 exhaust umbrella type set but they don't have anything in their catalogue for intake. I was told that the 318ci V8 set is compatible, so I bought a Fel-pro SS70014 but the intake seals in the package are identical in size to the blue viton ones I bought. The install guide even calls them positive type - I guess the 318ci heads are machined like that out of the factory.

Could someone please recommend a whole set (or just intake set) that I could use? I found an earlier post on here that mentioned Sealed Power Mv-1771 seals (discontinued) which I can only find on ebay. Would they work? At this point, I don't care if they are viton or rubber or polyacrylate.

Kind regards,
Robert

You might consider using oem style, you risk removing the needed lubrication to your valve stem. Most of our older oem mopars are not engine specific if the stem diameter is the same.

Consider replacing what you took off with new ones of the same.

Like these... or not. Im pretty sure slants use the same stem diameter, that would be the only thing to look for different but they make the same for all sizes.

Hi XfbodyX. Thanks for the reply. I had a quick look at the ebay listing but their intake seal is exactly the same dimension that my small blue viton one (or the intake seal in the SS70014) kit:
This is the photo from the ebay listing:

And this is mine (the wrong size):

The intake seal I took off has a large (.9") OD diameter at the bottom.
Would this be of the right size? (100) Sealed Power MV-1771 Engine Valve Stem Oil Seals | eBay

Rock auto shows the more normal looking intake and exhaust ones made by other manufacturers.

I'd be ordering them locally so it's easier to return if there are issues.

Hey Mike, the Enginetech S222P (intake) is not the right size, it has a 0.8 OD (Enginetech Catalog). Mine is bigger (0.9 OD): the S222P fits inside the cup..

My engine is a slant 6 225ci. The 318/360 V8 seem to have a different valve guide OD.

If this isnt close all I can say is put a dam hemi in it and be done!

These are give or take .900 and also fit my 76 318 heads. I looked at a newer gasket set and ex were the same but the intakes were the smaller ones.

The large ones.

Up for sale is a new set of 16 Detroit Valve Stem Seals for the 1960-80 Chrysler 170-198-225 Slant 6 and 241-260-270-273-277-301-303-313-315-318-325-326-330-331-340-345-354-360-392 CID V8 Cyl Engines. Please check compatibility info for your vehicle as these fit some years of these engines but not all. Some engines use them for intake only, exhaust only, or both.

These are the ones I was looking for! Thanks XfbodyX!!! In the meantime, I was able to decode the part number on the inside of the badly worn seal. It is #1630241. According to google MAHLE SS45298 is also a good match - and is also available from Amazon. Ebay shipping is prohibitively expensive to Canada, especially now :-( ..

Thanks for all the help!
