So.. My temp warning light came on the other day. Right after I cleaned pretty thoroughly under the hood. Yeah, I know.. not the best idea. The temp seems low enough, no crazy boil over when opening the cap at all.. everything seems normal, except for the light. Since, I did a thermostat change, full coolant flush, and even took the temp sensor out of a spare factory 4bbl intake I had and swapped that out. Light still comes on as soon as the motor just gets up to temp.. I swear it isn't running hot at all.

So what gives?

Hello from the future! this is why I’m here. My gauge is reading between low and mid but the overheat warning light comes on not to long after firing the car up.

My 88 does the same thing. The first time it did it it freaked me out. Guage accurate, light not. Changing guage didn't help. I got used to it.

alright were you ever able to figure out why the light comes on? I’ve been scared to drive the thing worried I’ll blow a head gasket or worse.

Because the rocket-science transistor-resistor-capacitor combination in the gauge gave up. I think I have something posted somewhere here in the forum.

I would guess that's probably it since I know I changed the guage but don't know if I changed that board or not.

There's no danger, the guage is still accurate or at least mine was despite whatever makes the light come on.
