I've been having better luck keeping them out of the engine bay with a combination of mothballs spread throughout the engine bay and then sprinkle cayenne pepper over everything.
Before I take it out (which hasn't happened yet this year), I use the leaf blower to blast everything out. Leaves a bit of a mess under the vehicle but that just adds to the ambiance when I return the car.
