Hard for me to do, my cars have traditionally stuck out like a neon sign. The one previous to my current daily driver, a 1996 Dodge Caravan, not so much, but the car previous to that one, a 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII, did. Long and black, with a pretty uncommon roof line, and the hump on the trunk lid (for some sort of faux spare tire, I guess) stood out a mile away. Car before that was a 1988 Beretta (dark red metallic, not so common), and before that, a 1983 Accord (that one was pretty forgettable). Currently have a 2006 Monte Carlo SS, in Victory Red. On colour alone its pretty hard to miss, and there are very few of them around with that colour (most are black, with more blue, and silver being more common).

Pretty much impossible with me.
I've always bought old cars and done things to them.
Even the past ten years....two Caravelle's? Nope.
89 Caprice painted flat black with a skull hood ornament?
Nope.
Fifth ave with cop wheels?
Nope.....

The old style traditional (ie. mechanical tumbler style locks) would repeat every so many thousands of cars. Considering that they were selling about 10-12 million cars/year, it could easily be that there were a few hundred to a few thousand keys that would be tha same. Some event woirked in a different brand of car. The door key for my dad's 1966 Chevrolet Biscayne sedan worked on the ignition for his friend's 1968 Galaxy convertible, but didn't work on the doors. With the newer electronic keys that have either a resistor or a transponder in the plastic key surround, the key may turn, but the vehicle won't start.

Then there's the mid 60's Chevy's where as long as it wasn't in the lock position you didn't even need a key to start it.

We were in Illinois visiting family one year, and stopped off at a Walgreens. My mom had to run in and get something real quick so we stayed in the van. A few minutes later, she come snout and get into the van (same model/color) right next to us and just looks over. It took a couple seconds until she realized what had happened..lol

Another one regarding the keys. The same van in the previous story. We were at Kroger in town, and hit the lock button on the fob, only to find out there was another with the same frequency or however that works 3 spots away. After talking to the owner, dad found out that while ours had been local its whole life, the other was from the west coast. And I guess they used the same frequency or whatever at go destinations since they were so far away.

My first car was a 78 Delta 88. You could start it and take the key out. We were driving out of town one day and I pulled that stunt with my now wife. At 55, I handed her the keys and said "can you hold on to these so I don't lose them."

...the reaction was priceless

Working @ Amoco station in Des Moines, I opened & got a call "you see the tan VW across the street keys are on top of soda machine take it to....." looked & saw tan VW towed it to..... Next morning guy stops in & asks if he can park his pickup on the lot as his VW had been stolen the day before. I looked across and there was another tan VW over there. I hooked it & swapped it out for the mistake. A while later cops all over, the guy and his wife show up she's yelling that he was cheating on here and lying about his car being stolen! I could have let it simmer but I went over & put the flame out and apologized. Laughed about that one for a long time!
