The AHB rear ends are getting harder to come by, easier to find a whole AHB car. There’s a few years of B-body rear ends that can swap in easily enough without any cutting. Like ‘67-‘70 or so.
Jeep 8.25 can be made to work, can make a Ford 8.8 work with a little cutting and welding, then you get cheaper/more part availability, posi rear and disk brakes. If you have a driveline shop around you, you’ll be able to reuse your drive shaft, will just have to have it cut down a little bit.
Definitely try to get the 125mph speedo; it’s worth 100 cool points and makes excessive speeds possible

Welcome aboard.

Thank you very much for the information. That gives me some more options to consider. Glad to be here! Looks like a good place to find some information on my new project

Would you know if the XJ 8.25 would be the correct width or need some sort of modification other than cutting off spring and shock mounts?

Don’t quote me on anything but, I believe the ‘95 and older XJs had a 60.5” track width and perches at like 44” center to center.
Your ‘86 should have a track width of 59.5” and perches as 44.46” center to center.
So with the right wheel backspacing and moving the spring perches a cunt hair, should be close to a drop in swap.
