It is possible to run duals without moving the tank. It's a lot of work but 2 1/2" pipes will fit,,,,,,,,,,,,just. A 318 would get by fine with smaller pipe which would make thing a whole bunch easier.
I made my own exhaust using straight pipe and mandrel u-bends, cut and welded together. A decent place with a pipe bender (and a guy who knows what he's doing) can bend it up also. Only downside is, it'll most likely be compression bends and not mandrel.

Kind of hard to get good pics under the car but show what I mean.

The emissions effects on the 318 through the 80's was dramatic as well. The pre cat Y pipe strangles the engine. Our 84 Diplomat with only the one maniflold tube up to the air cleaners easily out gunned the 89 5th Ave that is fully saddled with air pump precats and dual tubes from manifolds to the air pump... and that's totally stock LB vs LB.

By the way, in Canada,in 1988 M bodies started to get the US emissions (pre cats air pump etc) kit...some still squeaked in with the 87 and older Cdn emissions (smooth Y pipe, no air pump etc.).
