New wheels

I had to replace the tires this year on my ‘80 RR because I intend to drive to Carlisle this year. Decided to put new wheels on at the same time. I know some people say the bigger wheels don’t belong on the older cars but I think they look great. What do you think?

I don't care for big wheel's on older cars myself BUT, the only person that really needs to like it is the one that owns it.

If you're going for that Foose look you need to drop it until you can't see daylight under it. Otherwise you're driving a donk...

The biggest reason I went bigger is there is no choices for tires in 14 and 15 inch sizes anymore. About all that is available is BF junk or Cooper Cobras. And about the widest available in those are 235’s.

18x8 up front and 18x10 in rear.

Did you notice your front sidewall is a tad shorter than your rears even though they're the same 40 series? Looks like about a 1/4" difference between the top of the numbers and the line above them. So maybe a 1/2" difference in overall height?

Yes. The aspect ratio of 40% increases the sidewall as the width increases. I like the small amount of rake this gives to the stance of the car.

I agree as the ride quality is not as good, but it sure handles better. If I had it to do over again, I would have went with a 17” rim and a 45 series tire.

it sucks that decent 14 and 15" options are virtually non existent now. Try finding decent tires with white walls in those sizes too.

I'm in the same camp. Went 18" in preparation for a big disc brake setup that never materialized. I've bent two rims since putting them on the car in 2014. I love how they look and the handling is awesome, but damn the ride is harsh. Still thinking a move down to 17" or even 16". The brake setup I put together will fit under 15" rims.

Just incase there is any confusion.....

Example: P215/70R15
215= tread width in MM (different manufacturer's measure how wide a tire is in different parts of the tread/sidewall)

P= Pmetric.... LT= light truck and normally 6,8 or 10 ply (C,D or E load range)....
70= 70% as tall as it is wide....40 = 40% as tall as it is wide.....
15 = the big hole in the middle... lol (don't think that needs explaining)..

Now a 31X10.5R15 is totally different...

31= how tall the tire is ( diameter) meaning 31 inches tall (wheel with will effect how tall a tire is....
10.5= how wide the tire is, 10.5 inches wide..... R= radial (steel belted construction)....
15= big hole in middle on tire.....

ST205/75R15 is a trailer tire..
ST205/75D15 is a trailer tire also..
R = Radial construction
D= Bias Ply construction.
Now on a trailer tire right after the 15 (or whatever size you have) C,D or E is the load range (plys)...
If there is a XL in the tire size description then said tire has an extra load range......

PS: on trailer tires how the suspension is set up affects what construction of tire...

Radial is for sprung axles

D- Bias Ply is for hard mount axles
