too expensive. found a nice F Body one but it was over a g. every other one i found were 8 3/4. the search continues. might see if that PA one is still up. for now i gotta fuss with a loose tilt steering column.
upgrading to a 8.25 rear end from 7.25. what to know?

8 3/4 wouldn't hurt either. A grand for a FMJ axle is ridiculous. I hope it was completely rebuilt
Man, rebuilt ready to run rear ends average around $2,300 near me. Average core seems to be about $300-$400, your travel time or shipping cost to actually get it in your hands, a new sure grip, gear set, new brakes, gaskets/seals, a shop to build it if you can’t yourself; you’ll be up over a grand real quick.

Every time i see an FMJ 8 1/4 they're $100 to $200 and the seller can't get rid of it

Yes, cores are cheap. my point was finding a rebuilt unit for $1,000 would be the deal of the month because rebuilding a core will cost you well over $1,000…but yes, you can find cores for cheap.Every time i see an FMJ 8 1/4 they're $100 to $200 and the seller can't get rid of it

Who's going to bother rebuilding it? If it's good run it. Someone wanting a grand for one that's not rebuilt needs to come down to realization. And if they claim it's rebuilt they'd probably mean new bearings and seals and slapping some paint on it.
If the seller wants more then a couple hundred bucks for it make sure you see it with the cover off.

"Core" is a relative term. This is what mine looked like inside when i got it and after i cleaned it. the diff oil wasn't that bad really.

If, if, if, but, but, but…not everyone puts used parts in unknown condition in their cars.
Point still being, a rebuilt rear end for $1,000 is a great deal because you can’t rebuild them for less.
So, in direct regard to my original replay of if the 8.25” for $1,000 is rebuilt being a good deal, that’s still a factual statement.

Some of us literally buy things with the plans of rebuilding it and not leaving it as is and can provide an idea of how much it costs when they need to be rebuilt. Like people who buy open 8.25 with the plan on building a sure grip rear end to replace their 7.25…I personally wouldn’t swap a blown rear end for another 37+ year old rear end without knowing it was rebuilt or already having a plan of rebuilding it. Thats just me.

I think when it comes to used parts like these axles for most people here if it's good they run it.
If you open it up and it's clean looking with no obvious damage or signs of major wear that's not unknown condition. Chances are pretty slim for an FMJ body 8 1/4 to have issues.
I'd imagine the actual price to buy rebuilt axle is all over the place. The gears and axle shafts don't need to be replaced if they're not bad so it probably comes down to what a new sure grip section, seals and bearings?
The way so many new parts have issues these days I'd feel more comfortable using the original pin and spider gears unless they had issues.
