I know the Flip Top Gas Cap is not to everyone’s taste but I made this adapter for my car and since then I have received several PM’s from another site wanting to know if they can purchase one. So I thought I would post a thread to see if there is any interest.

I saw these flip style caps being used on several A-Body cars at a couple of large Mopar car shows and thought that would look pretty slick on my 79-RR. I made proto type adapter to allow the mounting of a Charger (1967-1970) or Barracuda (1967-1969) flip top gas cap to my 79 RR. This simple modification is done by using the adapter that mounts over the original gas opening. The adapter is mounted by using the existing screws (I replaced the existing screws with new stainless steel screws) and screw holes used to hold the fuel filler neck to the quarter panel. It is a simple modification making it easy to revert your car back to its original state without leaving any tell-tale signs. I think it looks sharp too. See pictures below.

If there is any interest, I can have these adapters fabricated at a local machine shop. They are made from DELRIN®. DELRIN® is a crystalline plastic which offers an excellent balance of properties that bridge the gap between metals and plastics. DELRIN® possesses high tensile strength, creep resistance and toughness. It also exhibits low moisture absorption. It is chemically resistant to hydrocarbons, solvents. These properties make DELRIN® ideal for many industrial applications.

If there are others who are interested in adding a “Flip Top” style gas cap to your car, let me know. I could get a batch made up for the F-Body owners. I would need to place an order for the material and then have the local machine shop fab them up for me. I can make them available for $55 including the shipping if I have at least 15-20 units per batch run (possibly cheaper with enough interest).

If interested send me a PM and I will start a list on the thread. When we have at least 15-20 we can get these rolling. Just want to get a feel to see if there is an interest. I am sure the more we have the cheaper the cost, just not sure where the price break is. Not looking to make a buck just want to break even and make this option available for those who may be interested.
I am interested in your thoughts or comments, I am open to suggestions........Thanks

Now if you could find somebody to make those rear window louvers for a reasonable price you would have a gold mine.

Funny you said that......that is the next project to tackle. I have the original louvers to use as a template. However each louver blade on the original F-Body louvers actually goes under the window trim molding making it difficult to remove for cleaning. I will change the design to allow for a hinge at the top so you can lift them up to clean the window or to remove them completely......stay tuned.

I would go with pins at top and bottom. If you use a hinge at the top and slip you may take out your back window. Mine has the electric defrost on the back window and I`d be hard pressed to find another one should it get broken.

Good point! Although the hinges I was thinking of would be like a cotter type pin that would allow the window to pivot and hinge at the top but still allow for full removal. The bottom would be held down using the quarter turn fasteners.
Thanks for the input, it is very helpful for me to get another point of view so as to not get trapped with my own ideas and thoughts!

List for first run adapter caps:
1. volareandgtcat -Thank you!

Side Note:
I spoke with my machinist and he said if we could atleast do a minimum run of (25) units, he would cut cost down to $45.00 for each piece to have them machined. This includes the material and labor. I am not sure but I think $3.00 would be more than enough to cover shipping? If we could get 25 interested people these could be as low as $48.00including shipping. Sounds a much better than $55. What ever we are able to save will be passed on.

You have a great looking car, and if I had an F body one of those caps would be going on my car for sure. What a great idea, and very well thought out.

Great product.
Hope people order them.

I'd like to 3D print rear louvers and F 78/79 grilles.

Dr Lebaron, You mentioned 3D printing a louver....I was thinking, if you have a 3D printer maybe you could make these adapters at a cheaper price for those interested. Just a thought.....???? I am for anything that will make it more affordable

the type of material that a 3d printer yses might not hold up under gas spills and fumes, but sounds like a great way to make them a bit cheaper in cost
