Saw that a few years ago. It's running a 528 crate engine. Wonder what it could top out at?

I read somewhere recently that the top speed of a race Daytona was north of 230 mph. Don't remember the actual number was. Believe it was in MCG about a test done back in '69.

Maybe with a Saturn Booster rocket strapped to the roof!

The faster you go, the more HP required.
The 707 hp Charger Hellcat tops out at 204, on the 10 mile Goodyear test track in Ohio.
For a fact, Baker had 575 hp to go 200.447 in the slicker '69 race Daytona body at Talladega.

The often quoted Daytona drag number, .29, refers to the race car, not street version. They never tested the street version. They were only interested in the race cars.

Here is where they really put it to a stock one and it seems they pulled 145mph from a street version. Watching the vid, to me it looks like he pushed it pretty hard.

I got that from a 440 4 bbl. Superbird, 3:55 gear, back in 1980, driving it home after I bought it! :cool:

Ive never been lucky enough to drive one, rode in two but never drove. I did have a 70 6bbl runner at one time and it ran well but never thought twice that it was a big car as it wasnt with the c bodies of the day but id bet that nose would take a bit to get used to.

Yes, the extra 18" of "hidden sheetmetal" makes it harder to park.
Like anything you get used to it. Never crashed it!

That's why I said RACE Daytona, not stock off the showroom floor.

I read your info...

MCG made up some T shirts with the "243 mph" on it, implying it was done at the Chelsea Proving Grounds.
A little high from the actual top speed of 205 that Glotzbach ran!
I talked to the guys that were there. 205. Not any higher with a 575 hp nascar engine.

Now, it would go faster with Nitrous on a dual carb race hemi.....

So, depending on how much HP you have, that will determine top end.
I'd say at any speed, the car would be stable enough. Have to have tires that would work, too.

Here's the Chrysler document that tells the origin of the "Fake 88" at the Talladega Museum. They have known it was phony since 1997.
The original is finishing up restoration at Ray Evernham's shop, Big Iron Garage.

IDK if Nitrous would give more top end speed. It might get you there faster but ultimately the engine will reach max RPMs and that will be the limiting factor on top end speed.

Or am I wrong?

I'd think if it had more HP, it could get more top end, if the engine could spin that much higher. With the tire size of almost 30" and 2.76 gear, we are only talking a few hundred rpms. Maybe the NOS kicking in 4th gear??
Yes, interesting, for sure.
