Hey to everyone! Does anybody know if the "308" heads came with only 1.88 int. 1.60 exh. valves or did they also come with 1.78 int. 1.50 exh. valves as well? I have a pair with the larger valves, just want to know if 308 heads also came with the smaller valves. Thanks, Craig

They only came with the 1.78"/1.50" valves. Contrary to popular belief, 308s are not swirl port.

EDIT: My bad. The 302 heads only came with 1.78"/1.50" valves, and are commonly mistaken as "swirl port" heads. The 308 heads are all 1.88"/1.60" valves. Not only are they not "swirl port", this is the first reference I've ever seen or heard to them being such. The 308s are the late 318/360 truck heads.

Chrysler never made a swirl port head for the LA engine.

Well, all I wanted to know was the valve size. Thanks for the input and hope I didn't start a heated debate. :)

There is nothing to debate. - OEM 1.88"/1.60" only.
IHRA has them listed as legal replacement for some 318 engine combos, but I believe some 318's may have used 360 heads, or they still have to have the smaller valves. I haven't researched that because I'm working on a 360 combo. But it's a weird situation that should be clarified by NHRA tech.....if you can get a reply.

Ive always heard the 302's were swirl port..unless Im getting it mixed up with closed vs open chamber. the 360's were open chamber dogs, and the 302's were better from what I've heard.

I skipped that mess and went to magnums. Considering how little I've gotten to drive it, Im happy with my decision.

Not being a D, just showing why these two castings are called "Swirl ports/fast-burn," heads. Even seen E-berg call them that years ago in an article and give a bit of history on the development (starting in the '60's at Chryco) and how they were developed in the '80's more for emissions than performance. Even mentioned the 'heart-shaped combustion chamber' characteristics
