Calling on Axle Expert Advice

Hi Guys,

I don't know much about axles, (we call them diffs here in NZ) anyway I am looking at the 7.25inch to 8.25inch upgrade, I have located a 8.25" open rear end out of a wagon that had a 4 speed OD box in it. The guy didn't know the ratio so pulled the cover and sent me a photo. I can see it is a 2.94:1 ratio but my question is that when you look at the gear you can see on the V bit in the gear it looks a bit rough, is this anything to be concerned about. See Pic

No, that is completely normal. The gears don't mesh that deep. Brand new gears look like that a lot of times.

I just had my diff cover off yesterday on my 8 1/4 and it had the same or similar grooving going on. I figured I was not hearing it, so it must be ok. I have heard that familiar diff hum before and then soon there was nothing...........
