One positive for today

I found out that the coil on the electric choke was 10.2 ohms to ground....so that is one issue when tied to the ignition voltage...had everything disconnected from the engine side...I traced it back to the inside after the fuse box..there is a thin blue wire with a white tracer that is a 5.2 ohm short to ground..it is coming off the fuse the is in position 8...which is the 5 amp for the Fuel and temp guage...the brake warning and the low oil lights...seat belt lamp and buzzer....FYI I had the kick panel off and and probably shorted a wire behind it...and the sill plate with wires going to the seat belts...

Still no luck..not bad luck or good luck either

Okay who is a wiring guru....I have just about exhausted all posibilities...I checked out the underneath the seat and body wiring and none was shorted to ground...I was running out of time tonight so I hooked the bulkhead connector back up and have no short to ground out in the engine comparment...I hooked the battery back up and had the same symptoms....5.60 volts at the coil and the ballast resistor started to heat up...I unplugged the new ECU and I plugged up the old ECU and it jumped up to 12.01 volts...as soon as I grounded the case I saw sparks and the voltage dropped back down to 5.60 volts...here's some findings...on the ECU cable head pins 1 and 2 are shorted...that would mean 12 vdc is shorted to the negative of the coil...pin 5 of the ecu is grounded and pin 3 is not even there...as seen in the following picture...if someone could verify their findings on pins 1 and 2 of their cable head that would be helpful...crazy as it sounds I in no way changed or messed with the wiring harness on that side..

I thought about a new iginition system this morning

I put on of these boxes in my buddies Charger and it worked like a champ...can't beat the price either...$134.95...I will do this if I can't figure out the problem I got now by Sunday evening..I would cut into the wiring harness and dummy out the stock ignition items and leave them in place....would put box in the glovebox

Wish I could help. Wiring is like trying to read ancient Greek to me. I don't even possess an volt meter. I do have a lot of wiring diagrams though. My 79 Duster has the orange box ignition that was rewired by a friend of mine, there was some butchering to the harness before I got it. My Aspen has MSD ignition.

Did you check the grds ? The one from body to engine block ? Didn't you say something about elec choke ... is there a gasket between choke housing and carb ... should there be one on this type ?

The bank funds were good so I bought the Summit Box

Later on this afternoon...I remembered my buddy Paul's car running alot better after I put the Summit box on it...he set the rev limiter up a 6500 rpm and I will be much lower than that...that is one nice thing about their box...no modules and anything to mess with...tonight I took most of the wiring harness apart...lots and lots of tape...already cut power to the ecu and ballast resister...hope to have it up and running again Sunday afternoon..

25 extra bucks got it here this morning

Before I left the house UPS dropped off my box from Summit Racing...I took their box out and set it in the glovebox...get fit...their instructions also tell you to mount it in there or a place out of the engine compartment to keep it away from heat...oh well I will spend a good 4 hours on it tonight wiring it up....

The box is in there

I decided to test the distributor tonight when I got home because something had to fry on the last run to keep it from starting back up...I checked the old one first...390 ohms then zero as I turned the reluctor...the new Summit one read 970 K ohms all of the time so I figure it's gone. I got the box in the glove box...I ran new ten guage wire for the power and the ground...all connections I do are bare crimp connections then soldered and covered with heat shrink...took the wire harness out from the inside and ran my four new wires for the coil and distributor..got everything inside buttoned back up...

Okay I played with the other car today and then got some work done tonight

I finished the wiring harness in the engine compartment...I ran new wires all the way to the coil and distributor only to splice in some of the old distributor wires...all of them are crimped then soldered as explained before...I did away with a section of the distributor wiring that went by the alternator then made it's way back to the distributor..I also got rid of a 4 way connector for the coil...temp sender and oil sending unit...feel good about getting it done and started tomorrow....this is what's gone

IMG00761-20110529-0014.jpg

this is the new end....coil...distributor and oil sending unit....

this is the cleaner look after getting rid of the distributor jumper wire....

It runs now

Well I had a long night last night and did not get home to 1:00 AM...so I will post me progress today...I finished all of the wiring and it started right up...I ran it for a pretty long time...I set the timing at 10 degrees before top center for now....I have a small oil leak at the very rear of the driver's side valve cover...I will correct that when I pull the intake to repaint it..right now I am smoking my brisket and when I finish that I will take the wiring harness off to the side and tape the rest of the loom up...I didn't tape it all up in case there were any problems...I ran all the wiring inside the car in loom also to protect the wires...that is the only photo at this time...

It made it out of the garage....around the block...parked it on the street with those small front tires and then pulled it into it's home for at least the next two weeks...while I work on the 4 door car....

It's looking pretty sweet in the sunshine. Must have been great taking it for its first cruise after all that work you did. I really like those tailpipes, sounds great.

It was and thanks...I have to stiffen up that return spring on the carb...I was a 1000 rpm buy the time I got back in the garage.

I got something new and larger yesterday..

I got the Murry 26" radiator brand new yesterday at O'Reilly's for 129 bucks...I had a spare radiator fan shroud for my M body and decided to see if it fit...it did but is pretty dirty...will search for a better one...it already 97 here so all the cooling I can get I will take..I look up a part number for the Aspen 26" radiator fan shroud and they match...guess they were using them through 1989.
