R-body’s only came with 318 or 360’s.

None of the different B-body senders are anywhere close to fitting.
Also, I “think” ’72 was the last year for the 3/8” fuel line.

Chrysler may have made 100 different fuel tanks between ’65 - ’90. With that said, they might have made 700 different sending units – with only a few that might be interchangeable.

The FMJ body and early front wheel drive fuel sending unit (to tank) seal might be the smallest diameter they used (as well as the diameter of the fuel filler neck).
When the front wheel drive cars went to fuel injection, that diameter got a lot bigger.

The only fuel senders to fit FMJ tanks are, well, FMJ senders – and even then, they will only fit within the three different tank groups.
The three different fuel tank versions are: The ’76 to mid ’77. The mid ‘77 to ’79 (I think) and then ’80 to end of production. All three tanks required different senders – with variations of each.


It is not that hard to remove the 5/16” tube from an old sender and replace it with a 3/8”. Epoxy works well. Also using aluminum tubing makes the bending a breeze.

That was the reason I recommended to find a replacement tank, to begin with. 30-40 years is hard on a fuel tank. And for $100 or so, it is not worth the hassle.

They didn’t make any fuel senders for FMJ’s with 3/8” fuel sender (or fuel lines).
A person could make an existing (used or new) sender (5/16”) and convert it to 3/8” for a bit in materials and your sweat – which might not be a bad idea for a high HP car.

Believe me - if I had the extra $100 I would already have a new tank installed and driving it most likely. But such is life.. I get to do it the hard way - :rolleyes:

Thanks Bud. What I really need is a big tank. I'm going to have to fuel up far to often with the tank they come with.

UPDATE - I dumped a gallon of Mean Green degreaser and a gallon water in the tank. Doing this to attack the sludge build up at the bottom.. New in tank screen will be here any day now, and once I pressure wash the tank out, I should have it at least running.

Sounds like your about there. See if its fuel or spark now. Keep a spare fuel filter in the glove box once you get her road worthy. The tank looks surprisingly good! You'll have her on the road in no time.

I was amazed at the effectiveness of Mean Green - and only $4 to fix the sludge problem, (well and $2 at the car wash) solved it.. Cheaper than $100 for a new tank. I only hope the issues it has now will be able to be as easily fixed. Fuel, Spark, Air - like a mantra.. lol
