So last year the wife's daughter was needing a vehicle for school and work. I was like okay I will get her something dependable. Decided to get her a Nissan Altima with low miles. Over the weekend she decided to come by to visit with her mother for awhile.

Well as always I figured I would go check the Nissan out as I always do. I pop the hood and the motor oil was 2 quarts low I was like when is the last time you checked the oil Oh I don't remember. The first issue.

I then said when did you put air in the tires last Oh I don't remember. The second issue. Each tire was only 20 psi when each one holds 44 psi. I just shook my head and looked at the wife and walked in the house.

I kindly said in a soft voice even though I was pissed I will not buy a car or vehicle every year. It is her responsibility to maintain her own vehicle not ours. This could be the very reason why one may drink beer lol

That and dealing with the general public everyday is the reason I drink beer.

General public, now too stupid to cross a street.

Look at 1920's/30's Popular Mechanics magazine.
Project for 12yr olds like building radios, a steam engine, a motorcycle, go cart, etc.
Now would they even let a 12 yr old use a band saw?

Chase the Pokeman across the street.
    No vehicles on the screen.
    People chasing Pokeman while driving.
    Need the two to meet.

Careful with that Altima and the oil level. Even without being low, they tend to suddenly get extra crankcase ventilation in the side of the block if it's a 4 cyl. The 3.5L V-6 likes timing chains, ESPECIALLY if the oil maintenance was neglected. Just saying.......................

Come to think of it, the 4 cyl isn't timing chain friendly either.........

Speaking of kids. I know some that are just fine and could just about build you a house from scratch, single handed (knowledge wise) and others that would be lost if asked to roll down a car window,,,,,,,,,,,,,,in a car without power windows.
Some that aren't afraid to work and get their hands dirty and others that couldn't last more than 2 minutes before smart phone DT's would set in.

My opinion? All depends on the parents.

Have to agree. We never let our kids just sit around and play on their phones or play video games all day. They have always been required to play at least one sport (and they were allowed to decide which sport), they are required to help out around the house and the the yard. My daughter knows how to check and change the oil in her Caliber (knows how to change the rear cam position sensor too because I made her help me change it). My son is on summer break from school but spent yesterday crawling around the auto wreckers with me and today out at a tree farm digging up 8 foot cedars for the hedge my wife wanted. Keep them busy, keep them interested, keep them learning new things, and they seem to turn out all right.

Back at the first of July, I was pretty happy when my oldest cam home from work at 8pm(he's 17) , then helped me in the garage till 3am installing the new comps cam and timing chain in the Mirada as we were trying to have it running to go to the Atlantic Nationals, it was a great way to spend time together.
Here is where we finished at 3am Wednesday night, we work on it together the next day and at 4pm we were breaking in the new cam. Yes the engine bay needs a good cleaning and paint....lol

Urban kids don't care about car ownership anymore.
They're on the phone and if they want a ride it's UBER.

To a point but not altogether.
There's been examples on here of members kids getting in on the hobby.

The media always gives you a broad stroke picture of what's going on but there's always young folks who don't buy into the brainwash bullshit.

Actually it's way cooler to just steal a car these days.
    Why own one?

But at one time you got in trouble for that.
Now it's just catch and release or until they wrap one around a tree and get 'kilt'

Sadly, the dumb ones usually manage to take out the innocent ones on their way out.
