The return hose uses clamps (flat spring clamps) and is low pressure.
Both ends of the pressure hose are hex ended and requires use of an line wrench (and not an open-end wrench) to remove.
To complicate things, there is a fitting (painted black, to match the color of the pump) on back side of P/S pump that sometimes likes to unscrew when removing the pressure hose from pump.
If that fitting is trying to unscrew, use a backup wrench on it (open-end is fine on the larger fitting).
Sometimes, a person can use a crescent wrench to hold the fitting in place with a line wrench on the hose - but most times the clock position of the larger fitting prevents that.
If the large fitting loosens, one can just re-tighten it back after line is removed and call it a day.
The wrench sizes are:
P/S hose to steering gear - 1/2 inch (line wrench)
P/S hose to pump - 5/8 inch (line wrench)
P/S pump adapter - 1 inch
The P/S return hose size is either 3/8" or 11/32". The older Chrysler's use 11/32" and that changed to 3/8" sometime in mid or late '70's (or early '80's) - I can't remember.
A 11/32" hose (if you can find one) will be extremely hard to get onto a 3/8" nipple and if it does go on, will split in a short time.
A 3/8" hose will fit (but very loose) on a 11/32" nipple, but it will leak, for there is no way to get (any) hose clamp tight enough to keep it from leaking.
The hose will be stamped as to what size it is. To be honest, the P/S return hose is under low pressure and doesn't leak often (except for when wrong hose is installed) - and can be reused in most cases.
