We get a lot of situations in which there is an accident, and the opposite lane slows down to look at what is going on, creating a dangerous situation in the opposite lane due to the highway/freeway coming to a sudden stop. They should put up barriers to not only stop cars from crossing the median, but to prevent rubbernecking.

I'm not a big fan of the cables, they can cut through cars pretty easily depending on where the car impacts the cables vertically. With some of the lower hood lines, I can see them going through the lower part of the windshield, and cutting through the passenger compartment.

They've got 3 cables strung on steel posts concreted 6 feet in the ground every 20 feet (I'd estimate). Bottom cable is about a foot off the ground, second 2 feet and 3rd is about 3 ft. Nothing should be able to get underneath them, in theory. Might not be a perfect solution but it works in 90% of the cases. Usually they only get tested in the winter, mostly by the "I've got 4 wheel (or all wheel) drive so I can go 70 on glare ice" people........................You know the ones I'm talking about.

The only places we have concrete walls in the median is where the inside lanes of each direction are close together. Well technically the walls aren't IN the median but on each side of it.

Yep they put those genius things up over here to keep cars from crossing the median into oncoming traffic. Saw a BMW hung up in one, don't know how fast it was going, but the wires went all the way through to the middle of the grille back at an angle almost to the back tire.. if you've ever used a wire cheese slicer you get the idea, I also noticed the emergency crews were in less than a hurry, for whatever that tells you.

Ever notice that the cable idea is not used in racing? Ever wonder why? I realize that racing is not street driving, but most safety innovations have come from racing.

I'd like to see some variation of the tire walls used in racing. Maybe take old tires, chain them up in 20-30 foot sections, and when they are put down, join the sections together. There are certainly enough old tires around to do that. Maybe put some plastic sheet over the top to prevent stagnant water so that the mosquitoes don't get too bad. Tire stack should be 5-8 tires high, like I said, 20-30 foot length sectoins, and maybe 6-8 rows wide. Combination of the rubber flexing, and the mass of the tire sections should slow almost all cars down. Section that were hit would just be replaced, and joined to the sections that were not damaged.

Couple random pics of not an F/M/J body but kind of cool. This car got brought in to work because it doesn't start when hot (new NOS coil coming to fix the problem). It's a 1942 Ford and it's been in the same family since new. The grandfather of the guy who has it now bought it new just before the war shut down production. When he passed away in the early '80's it went to his son. When he passed away about 10 years ago, it went to HIS son. It's all original except tires, hoses, belts, etc.........Only 43,000 miles on it and no rust other than the surface rust showing. The flathead has never been apart other than for valve adjustment a couple times (as far as he knows). The guy has no plans to restore it and I think that's a good idea. Looks perfect just the way it is, plus he can drive it without worrying too much about getting a rock chip or being in the rain. About the only thing not original is it was converted to electric wipers eons ago and it has a dual point distributor which as far as I know isn't the way the came new(?)

Anyways, couple pics. Couldn't get any real good ones with the other cars parked on each side.
