Just use the ATF+4, which is synthetic, and replaces ATF+3 and Dexron I, II, etc...You're over thinking it too much.

Just to clarify, C-4 is a ford transmission, it has nothing to with ATF+4
ATF+4 is literally the name. ATF is not the same as the ATF+ series

The ATF+ series has different friction properties than Dexron. Teams of engineers sat down and figured out what these transmissions should use. Would you trust random people on the internet saying they know better than the engineers who designed the transmission? Dexron is probably fine in older A904 transmissions, but I wouldn't use it in late 80s cars as the A998/A999 have different internals and lockup torque converters. A lot of the Mopar world gets influenced by what people do on the A,B,C and E body cars, but there are subtle differences on the M bodies

Ah, I see. Question, I had my 1984 Fifth Avenue transmission rebuilt a couple of years ago, it shifts smoothly and doesn't slip. I have only used reputable equivalent brand Dexron D3 in it. Would I benefit from partially replacing it with atf+4 when I next change the filter?

The old Type F would do great. It was like a notch below the B & M fluid in terms of the friction coefficient and a lot cheaper. Now most of it is just regular fluid with type F on the label.

I just changed the fluid and filter in my 727 today and put Motorcraft type F in it, as per the recommendation of Paul Forte from turbo action. The transmission had picked up a shudder in high gear with the converter locked up and the pump was noisy, it cleared right up after the change. Not sure if it was the fluid or filter that hadn't been changed since the 90s but it works very smooth now.
