Hey guys, I'm doing a mild build on my 1987 Chrysler fifth avenue 318(big cam, 4 barrel swap, headers, and a limited slip 8 1/4). I know that they either came with the a904 or a727 and I'm not sure which I have or how to tell for certain, I know the 904 isn't necessarily known for its strength so if I do have it will I be okay to use it with a rebuild or should I swap out for something stronger

That is definitely a 904 series transmission. Probably the 998 or 999 variety which are actually pretty tough and build up pretty well with the right rebuild parts

A built 904 will handle all of what your 318 can put out. The 727 will have more parasitic power loss than a 904.

My 904 is quiet ok with the 318-4 LB. The 2.45 axle leads to very late shift points (35km/h or 22mph 1-2 no throttle, 50km/h or 31mph 2-3 no throttle, doing 1050rpm then in 3 with lockup).

On the other hand, it is doing very relaxed and easy 170km/h (110 mph /3k3rpm) on the Highway as well. :D

Driver's side pan rail should have a number beginning with PK, but as mentioned above, most likely an A998 lockup. Despite what you may have heard, they are plenty strong for what you have planned. The lockup will keep tranny temps cool, and the extra forward clutch and steel planetary gears are better than what's found in non-lockup 904s

There's two identical posts going on now with duplicate information. Perhaps they could be merged?
