French racing blue comes from the initial racing colors assigned in formula 1, way back when. French cars got the medium blue (french racing blue), British cars got dark green (British racing green), US cars got white with blue stripes, Italian cars got bright red (what most people associate with Ferrari today), German cars got silver (origin of the Silver Arrows). This was back in the days that cars were painted for their country's colours; these days, they get painted sponsor colours.
