I always boil some water and soak the plastic bushings in the water for a bit to soften them prior to installation.

Well, the bushing install went pretty smooth...lubed it up with some White Lithium grease, did not even have to heat it up or anything, slowly it went through onto the linkage arm.

GREAT....right??? LOL

...and you'd be mistaken, just as I was.

Turns out that the 90-deg wiper motor is somewhat re-located in-between the three mounting studs, which mean that the center wiper motor output shaft is no longer where the center of the original motor was...subsequently, I actually can not even hook up the linkage, it is simply too long.

So I'm thinking there are three possible scenarios here:

1) Mopar used a different (shorter) wiper linkage (the part that hooks up to the wiper motor arm and to the wiper pivot points

2) Mopar used a shorter wiper motor arm (I do not think this is the case since the 90-deg motor came with an original arm and the part number was identical to my NOS piece)

3) Mopar used the same wiper motor arm and the same wiper linkage and I simply need to re-index the whole installation on my ride, that would be the preferred possibility since it's easy enough to pop the wiper arms off and re-align things

So before I proceed further, can anyone tell me if I'm on the right path here?

Thanks everyone! (...so close, heck, yeah the install did free up some room, which is what I was after....)

I believe the drive link is different between the 3 and 2 speed motors on my 77 volare. I can check the part numbers tomorrow to know for sure..

OK, lets start-
He swapped the original 1980 wiper motor for a 1989 Caravelle/Diplomat due to the 89 hogging less space.

This is where two parts book comes in handy.

I happen to have a 89 left wiper pivot in my hand and it has a real old part number-3799479
If they where using parts that old, I wouldn't think they changed much.

Except why the different wiper motors?
Supplier change?

So...I pulled the wiper arms off in order to rule out option #3 (that being the easiest one). Bad news, meaning, the re-indexing won't take up the difference between the two types of wiper motors.

My '81 parts book (section 23A-1400) shows:

1) 3799101 - LINK w/BUSHING, Wiper Pivot Conecting
2) 3799103 - Wiper Drive

...and I think Dr. Lebaron is talking about the actual pivot which is what mounts on the firewall/cowl sheetmetal and where the wiper arm itself attaches to. That part number is actually the same number my '81 parts book shows...so at least that rules out the possibility that the pivot arm itself is a different length, and that must mean the LINK itself is where the difference lies...at least for now that's the possible answer.

That's exactly what I thought about the L/S pivot.
All the same through the yrs.
I just happen to have a pivot in my hand at the time.

What was on those motors, came with those motor you got off me.

Hey, nice link to Mopartsgiant, thanks!

OK, picture's worth a thousand words right? So I think what I actually need is a different #12 (in the diagram), that appears to be 4334106, and they even show it in stock at a reasonable $18.27, of course the shipping is going to sting!!!

I'll snoop around for this part, in the meantime, do you think it's actually #13 that is different?

My '81 books shows:

1) 4026046 - PIVOT, Rt.
2) 3799479 - PIVOT, Lt.

So at least it would appear that the PIVOT should not be the issue since the numbers are the same between the two years anyways.

I recommend people to swap out the entire assembly (not including wiper motor, but wiper motor crank to pivots) with the new(er) style M-body linkage – to prevent issues like this.

I knew something was different – but couldn’t remember what.

I “think” the only pieces that remain the same between all F and M-body’s is the passenger side pivot, the rod connecting the pivots and the small plastic bushings (either three or four bushings, depending on year car).
It all will swap out as an assembly (from wiper motor shaft to pivots).

Alright...good news, I yanked the whole setup out...measured things out and drilled a new hole off-set to match the wiper motor offset. I put another bushing in, re-installed, gently re-tested, then went through several iterations of wiper delay, low speed and fast speed, all works good.

So...in the end, ugly hack, well, non-OEM I suppose, but it works!

Thanks for the input and suggestions everyone...

I managed to get the grommets. The flat bar that connects the dr side wiper to the passenger side has a round hole witha notch at the 12 o clock top of the hole. I notice you have tp pus the grommet into the flat bar then press it onto the nub as in the pic above. The passenger side nub points up and the driver side points down, so press the gromment in on the bar opposite on either end

M_Body_Coupe – you have a very clean engine compartment!

The new wiper motor looks more camouflaged now (which is a good thing?).

The newer motor looks cleaner build wise and looks like more hand space around the distributor.
I agree.

What I was going after was more room, especially right around the distributor...so the new motor absolutely gets me there. Had I scored a NOS one of these at some point in time, heck, I would have been happy to use it as the goal really wasn't to try to hide any of the non-motor parts.

Ahh..the clean engine bay is really a sad reflection of the fact that since the car became road-worthy I've put very few miles on it. Total of 6k KM over the last 7 yrs...never enough spare time to jam into the super-short cruising season we get around here.

Yeah, My engine could use a good cleaning and repaint. Since I put it together, I've enjoyed about 22,000 miles on Modoba.
