So finally got the 8.8 back after it taking forever for some reason at the rearend shop and got it installed today. My only concern is will i have to shorten the shaft? Ive been seeing around that the sn95 stangs are 45.5" from ujoint center to ujoint center. Does anyone happen to know what the length of the j body driveshafts are?

The odds of you needing the exact propeller shaft length is very slim. I don’t know the Ford specs, so can’t compare.

For the J-body, they transmission choices were: A998/A999 or A727. A727 require different lengths and different front slip yoke.
The differential choices were 7¼” or 8¼”. All A727’s was mated with an 8¼”.

Factory propeller shaft lengths:
A727/8¼” (J or 4dr M-body) = 48.60” long propeller shaft.
A998/A999/8¼” (J or 4dr F/M body) = 52.70”.
A998/A999/7¼” (J or 4dr F/M body) = 54.35”.

So what would be the better plan of attack? Measure from the tail housing to the flange on the rearend? Or try to go off the driveshaft length?

Axle is in the car now, right? Are you using a combo u-joint to adapt to go from Chrysler to Ford?

Slide the drive shaft into the transmission and bottom it out, then pull it back 3/4". That's the depth the slip yoke needs to be in the transmission. Now see if you can bolt it to the rear axle without moving the slip yoke in or out.

Yes the rear is in the car and i have a combo ujoint to use on the end of the shaft. So I bottomed it out in the trans and without using the ford mounting plate on the end of the driveshaft its a tight squeeze. At this point i think it only moves maybe an 1/8 of an inch. Its still pretty much bottomed out. Im guessing if it I pull it out 3/4" and its past the pinion thats where i need to take my measurement of the shaft?
