Ok lets put this out there, what cam would still idles nice to pass the inspection for being road legal, (not emissions) I have issues now with the inspector not happy with the idle and thinks its been modified. My trans will be a built 904 with a 2200 - 2500 stall and the rear end is 3.23, guys give me your best shot at what is a better option than a XE268

Tell your inspector to put his lips on the tail pipe and breathe deep for 2 mins. Problem solved.

I have to agree. I had a 270/280/110 in my 367. I could hardly hear it.Awesome cam. With a 750 on it, it went 12.9/106. A couple of years later with a 600 and double overdrive, it did over 30MpgUS.
This combo was awesome. It was my daily driver for around 4 years, until it dropped two lobes.
You are gonna love that combo. Don't be afraid to put some compression into it. I ran 10.9 with it on Canadian skunk-pee;87E10, and alloy heads.

Well a"built 904" has a low gear of 2.45.Together they have a starter gear of 8.79. That 268 cam,Is known to be soft on the bottom unless the cylinder pressure is quite high. With a 2200/2500 TC, I'm guessing it will be right up the middle, on that engine
This all conspires to possibly make a disappointing blast off the line.
Assuming the TC is a done deal, and on it's way; To ease your disappointment, I suggest cranking up the compression to the maximum for your gas. With alloy heads, this might be in the range of 10.4 to 10.8
Altho, with a 408, a soft bottom end might actually be a good thing.

I like the 3.21s;
At the top of first gear they will hit 60 mph at about 6200,with 27 inch tires and 5% slip.
At 32 mph, the 408 will be doing 3307, just below it's torque peak, which will probably show up at about 36 mph. You are gonna need serious rubber, an LSD, and a traction aider.
65mph will be about 2600,not too bad.

This is shaping up to a very nice combo.

Ok this is my combo I have worked out

10.03:1 compression
190cc heads with 2.02/1.6 valves
Comp Cams XE268 Cam
Double roller timing chain
Timing chain tension cover quick change front crank seal
Timing chain tensioner
408 stroker kit, Internal Balanced, Series 9000 CAST, I-BEAM RODS WITH 7/16" Cap Screws, Forged icon FHR Pistons, Rod Bearings, Main Bearings & Rings
Roller rockers 1.5
Airgap intake
770cfm street avenger
318/340 harmonic damper

To back it up I will have a built shift kitted 904 with the 2200 - 2500 stall converter driving through a 3.21 open rear end (may have to go LSD)

Just remember our gas here is RON not MON, you guys are lucky, we have 91 and 95 RON, our 95 RON is about as good as 87 MON with no ethanol in it so I can't push compression!

If you are buying roller rockers, I would buy 1.6s right away, assuming the heads will support the extra lift.
The LSD is not an option.
Don't forget to upgrade the fuel-line to 3/8 ALL the way, including to the filter sock in the tank. The HO carter fuel pump will be adequate.
Big tires are a given, as are brakes. Don't be driving a 140 mph car, with 100mph tires and 60mph brakes;that's how people die.

Its cost me a kidney, my ball sack, and my left gonad! but we have finally done it although it sounds like it will still have a doughy bottom end with the we cam in it????? oh and about an inch out the middle of the old fella! But its all good, I still have a right testicle so I will still have a ball to put the gas pedal to the floor, loose my right nut and mose well just walk everywhere!

Brucenz has a write up about his 8¼”/3.21 change over – about a year or two ago.

At 10.3Scr, and 408cubes, I sorta doubt there will be any doughyness, lol

Most of the complaints have been with 318s and low compressions. And some with lower stalls. And some, with all of the above.
You have got 2 out of 3 beat. And we'll see what that TC does! Maybe it will be 3 out of 3. And besides, your combo could stand to be a lil soft off the line, otherwise you will be either buying a lot of tires, or paying a lot of tickets, or both, lol.
