Transmission fluid

ATF-3 / Dexron should suffice. As far as I remember they are interchangable with ATF-4, -4+

If you're talking 904/727.
 
These oldschool trannys are not that picky on the fluid, I'd say.

My 727's (2x 69's and 1x 79's) and the 904 (LeBaron, 79) all get that Dexron 3.

OK ok, so yeah, with a factory install you do not - in fact with a lock-up converter Type-F could actually be a totally wrong way to go....but way back when, when the performance bug bit me, I do recall draining that factory fill and going to Type-F, and oh my, there was a "butt-meter" difference.

Now what I can not tell you is whether I did anything else at that time, such as cranking up the line pressure, or doing any basic shift-kit work, so take this with a grain of salt.

However, Type-F is all I have ever used since...mind you, this is all rebuilt transmission type of stuff with a pile of adjustments thrown in, race clutch packs, race bands, etc.
 
Service manual (79) says Dexron or Dexron II.
Start with 2 quarts, then check level in neutral while idling and add up to ADD mark (if at 80F operating temp) or up to FULL mark if at operating temperature.
 
Also how many quarts does it take? There appears to be no fuild in it at all for some reason
If I remember right, dropping the pan takes 3 or 4 quarts out of it. Start with 2 quartsband go from there.

Mopar had a TSB back in 2004 that said ATF+4 was backwards compatible with ATF+2 and ATF+3. You might get lucky on price if you check around different stores for ATF+4 and sometimes I see it on Facebook marketplace pretty cheap.
 
I found some dexron 2 on marketplace. There is some out there but you just have to search. My 727 took about 4 1/2 quarts on the filter change. I would assume a 904 takes less.
 
ATF+4 is the current recommendation, it plays well with the older fluids, and has very good characteristics. The latest Dexron will work as well. Type-F is good in a hi-performance build, but is an old fluid that lockup torque converters don't like.
 
Fluid and filter were last changed around 2019, not sure what kind of fluid they used, they told me I needed a new torque converter, but was way out of my price range at the time, so I'm assuming it's at least ok

The old Ford Type F is all that is needed, now Ford type F is just standard hydraulic fluid that has a red dye in it.
If you have a higher stall converter where the fluid will run a higher temperature then you should consider using a synthetic transmission fluid.
