This one is going to be heavy on photos!
Another thing on the list to do was to reclaim the trunk. I don't need a stereo that rattles pieces off of the car anymore (I'm getting old), but I still wanted something decent. I came up with the idea of moving the sub up onto the shelf under the package tray. Not a lot of room, so I had to have a custom box made.
Below is the sub box. It's a 12" sub with a ported box. Took up damn near the entire trunk. It was huge.
To get an idea of how large it was vs the new box.
That bracket in the center which I can only guess is there to help support the spare tire is going to work great for this. The spare tire mount itself needed to come out though as it interfered with the box placement. A donut spare wasn't going to do anything for me anymore as it is way too small in diameter.
Hard to see in this photo, but I had to remove a metric ton of seam sealer the factory splooged to hide the welds. I chiseled off what I could and a wire wheel finished the rest. Made one hell of a mess!
Angle grinder for the win.
New box will rest on top of this bracket and be secured with screws from underneath. I may change this up later on and install studs in the box that can drop into place. This method is a complete pain in the neck. More than a few neighbors walked by while nothing but my legs could be seen sticking out of the trunk. Must have been a funny sight.
I really need new trunk carpet. Despite having to cut a section out it has plenty of rips and hole worn into it.
The finished work. I reused the same sub and amp. It doesn't hit as hard due to it being a sealed box now, but I knew this going in. It still delivers more than enough low end.
Now onto the electric cutouts and Holley distributor!
