Busted Multi-function switch

I ended up accidentally breaking (I think it's broken anyway) my multi-function switch and need to fix it.

I got the wheel pulled no problem. Now I'm assuming I need another tool to pull this lock plate.

Then, on rock auto, they have two options for "turn signal switches" for 1980 Córdoba's with tilt column; WITH cornering lights, and WITHOUT cornering lights... what the heck is a "cornering light"??

Any other "special tools" I'll need after I get the lock plate off?

 
Cornering lights are a white light on the side of the front fenders that come on with the signal to shine around the corner. I don't see them on the pic of your car.

You do need a tool for the lock plate. Can be had relatively cheap at most any auto parts store.
Looks like this or a variation of it. The center threads on the steering shaft and the wing nut is tightened, which pushes the lock plate down against the spring so you can get the snap ring off.

Ah ok, thanks. Yeah, my car doesn't have the cornering lights then.

So, after I get the lock plate off, are there any special tools (or tips) I'll need to fix this? The video just shows the multi function switch flopping around loosely in the steering column.
 
I can't find any info on disassembly of this multi-function switch at all in the 1980 FSM. Only the wiring diagram.
 
Well, I got the lock plate tool. Removed the wheel and the lock plate... then discovered that the switch is actually fine, but the multi-function control arm is broken at a few places inside the column. Not good!

I think it's safe to assume this is going to be an extremely hard part to find.
 
Is your plastic stalk broken?I have a few used ones stashed away .2 screws hold that in.I have a NOS switch in my stash also,I'll look in my 1980 parts book for the part #

Yes, where the arm connects inside the column. It looks broken in a few places. I thought I needed the turn signal switch, but no.

It'd be great if you have one of these!

edit: I'll happily pay good money for the parts to fix this. Please let me know what you've got...

Do you have cruise control?
The plastic stalk is different if you do (or don’t) have.

That plastic stalk (doesn’t matter if you have cruise or not) is relatively easy to break if you are not paying attention, with a shirt sleeve or coat pocket.

Ones with cruise control are a bit harder to find and bit harder to replace (have to feed wire in and out).


- Without cruise: Pull the end cap off, get a small screwdriver and pull the felt to outside of the column, then remove both screws. I do recommend getting a magnetic tip screwdriver, for if you drop a screw, its more work to fish it out.
Once unscrewed, pull the old stalk out and reverse procedures to install.

- With cruise, the procedures are almost the same - BUT DO NOT just pull the old wire out, until you have a replacement part, first!
Let us know, so we can give instructions on how to replace that (once parts are obtained).

I don't have an '80 or '81 parts manual to give out part numbers.
I suspect (but not confirmed) that all Chrysler vehicles, except for Omni/Horizon, from '80 to '87 (or so) are the same, tilt or not - with exception with or without cruise.

Pretty much all of the stalks I have found at my local pull -a-part have ALL been broken, in the last few years (cruise or not).
I "think" I have one good stalk, but am planning on using it when I convert my '77 wagon to tilt steering (with a '84 tilt column).

Thanks Bud. Wondering if all these broken parts can be glued back together.. I don't see finding this part unless I can talk someone out of one.
 
I think the important question is if you have cruise control, or not.

If you do not have cruise, the cover or sleeve you are looking for is 4293911, which was superseded to 4221460 (official part name is W/S WIPE & WASH COVER), which was recently discontinued. MSRP is $12.05 (US) as of today – and might still be available from your dealership, possibly.

I couldn’t see your video – so not sure if you have cruise, or not.

You mentioned glue. It might be something to try. Also, there might be room inside of the sleeve for a thin wall metal tube – possibly.

1980 parts book shows 3747561 part # for XJS w/tilt + cruise,you need to reuse the thin metal stalk,there is a couple NOS ones on ebay,put Mopar 3747561 as a search,cheapest one was 25.00.Hope this helps
 
I'm not able to view his video, but is he needing the turn signal switch, the arm, or the cruise switch?
 
Thanks guys! Yes I have cruise control, and my stalk is broken where it attaches inside the steering column. (Where the multi-hinge type assembly is. The picture I posted shows where the break is (circled in red)

Ok, yes... I have cruise.. so when the part (3747561) gets here, I'll be looking for those instructions if you don't mind. Thanks in advance guys!
