Generally don't like rubbery sounding bass, but it works in this case. Vocalist sure puts some effort in.

and yes, that is an electric violin. Could be either Nash the Slash, or Ben Mink playing the electric violin, although I think it is Nash the Slash (later replaced by Ben Mink) on this version. Both Rush and FM were Toronto based bands, and seem to have gotten along well. They did tours in Canada together.

P.S. The guy playing electric violin for FM (on later versions) is Ben Mink, who also played the electric violin on Rush's song "Losing It" and has co-written one song with all of Rush, and done some stuff with Geddy Lee on his solo project.

Plant had already lost of a lot of his higher voice register in the 1994 orchestral version, not to mention being more than a little self indulgent in it (screwing with the vocals, etc.).

Interesting point about the 1975 version, you never really see John Paul Jones, just his hands on the keyboards, and his back turned away from the camera. Another very, very good musician who has never received much recognition, for either his contributions to the writing, his solid bass playing (he is supposed to be the bass player), or his ability to play a wide variety of instruments, from keyboards to mandolin. Also find it interesting that Page played a Danelectro (more than likely one of the Electric Sitar type instruments by the sounds he is getting out of it), but in the 1994 version, he is using a (heavily) processed Les Paul.

Yes...Jones was not only a phenomenal bass player but a incredibly talented keyboard player....amongst other things.
I always refer to "In Through The Out Door" as the John Paul Jones album. Very heavy on the keyboard.

When they have a leash on Plant he's perfect. Give him some slack and he gets carried away.
