That is one of the biggest things I have noticed with Western Canada vs. Eastern Canada. It is rare out here to get more than a couple of days of overcast. Growing up in Montreal, we could go weeks without blue sky anywhere. I have lived in Calgary and in Winnipeg, and the sunny days far outweigh the overcast days in either city in the winter. Still gets effing cold (coldest day that I have ever personally expeirenced was a -39C (about -39F) day in Winnipeg). One of the brightest winter days as well.

When it gets really cold in Calgary, we get Sun Dogs, which are basically the winter version of Rainbows, but in this case, the water molecules in the air are actually freezing, making for tiny ice crystals in the air, which, if the sun is ta the right angle gives the rainbow effect.

My father in law lives in Winterpeg so I'm aware of the prairie freshness.
It's gets damn cold out your way....in the east it's much more damp though so when we hit -20° you know it.....

Kostas.....if you ever get the chance to snap a pic of one of these Sun Dogs I'd love to see it......never witnessed that.

Captain:

I will have to wait for the right weather conditions, and even then, I don't know if it is possible. Sun has to be at exactly the right angle for the refraction to take place. When the weather gets that cold again, I will try, though. Here is a link that better describes how they happen:

http://cliffmass.blogspot.ca/2013/05/sundog.html

I have only seen them in Calgary, and it has to be quite cold, and a clear, or relatively clear day, or the sun won't be bright enough to make them appear.

I remember seeing them while riding around with my god daughters. The little one, 4 at the time, says "look at the rainbow". I told her its not a rainbow. She said "yes it is, I can see it". I then pointed out that it wasn't raining, and told her about sun dogs. I have seen both single and double sun dogs (I have also seen double rainbows).

You know one thing, though. It is really, really cold when you get sun dogs. Cold enough to freeze the humidity in the air.

And it does indeed get that cold in the West.
I remember well walking outside in Winnipeg and immediately feeling your nostrils freeze.....you guys get some arctic type cold out there.

Well the snow has held off all this time but it's supposed to show up tonight.
Been hanging between 25° and 30° and even the snow we get tonight shouldn't be Snowmageddon by any stretch....

I know why too......I actually put snow tires on my car.
Only other time I did that we got hardly any snow.
Maybe I'm onto something...... :eusa_silenced:

-36*c with wind chill factor -49*c here in Saskatchewan.

Yep....you guys are serious arctic out there.
My father in law is in Winnipeg....they're about on par with you. Hovering around freezing here with beautiful freezing rain. The main roads aren't bad but the sidestreets are ice rinks.

Calgary is at -19C, about -28C or so with wind chill. Sunny, though. Montreal is getting freezing rain, according to my mom.

Kostas

I was supposed to do a run up north today but took a pass.
Everything up there is a skating rink right now.
This is what my trailer park looks like right now.

Recipe for a shitshow....
First it snowed, then it warmed up and rained, then turned to freezing rain and turned everything into an ice rink, then it snowed over that and slightly melted and then the temperature nose dived big time.

It's now 14°F with a wind chill of -4°F
This if course means that all of my doors on the Fifth will be frozen and she'll be real happy to fire up in this crap.
And.....it's Monday.....

It's so damn cold outside! It's like 50 degrees! I heard it's getting down to the 20's this week. Shut the damn door Captain! You're coolin' off the whole damn continent.

Hey man....It's not me. It's western Canada.
I tried to do my part. I put my snow tires on which usually means it won't snow. :laughing6:
