A nice surprise! I found OY's build sheet! It was in the worst place possible, folded up right underneath the carpet where the driver would rest their left foot. It is not in perfect shape, but I was able to salvage it and most of it is legible. I did find out that OY was built on March 15th of '78. The date on the door sticker is weathered right where the build date is supposed to be, so now I finally know when it was built.

I managed to straighten the build sheet out, carefully clean it up and put it in a transparent sleeve so most of it is readable. I found out a few other things such as OY originally had a locking gas cap (J46) from the factory. I wonder what happened to it. It also had factory floor mats (C92) and was delivered with five gallons of gas (Y95). The AM/CB transceiver (R12) and power tri-band antenna (R47) are also factory original. It was built already "sold" (Y14) apparently. I wonder if it was specifically ordered by the original elderly woman owner. I also know from original sales paperwork that I received when I bought it, that it was sold new at Bill Berry Motors, in Canon City, Colorado.

An even nicer surprise than finding the build sheet, is seeing the condition of the floor pans! They are in really great shape with only a little surface rust on the rear pans. Until I bought it in 2012 and drove it back to Pennsylvania, OY spent all of it's life in the high desert area of Pueblo Colorado and Farmington New Mexico, and it shows. Not bad for a 40 year old F body! :)

Rear passenger side: This is the worst area, but still only just surface rust. I'm going to wirebrush any rust and paint it with rust inhibitor. There are also some areas that amazingly are still shiny metal where bits of the paint came off from vacuuming.

For being 40-years old – your floorpan looks perfect!

I have a couple of requests.
One, can you take a picture of your two carpets side by side, please?

Second, would you mind scanning your build sheet (front and back) – for I would really love to get my hands on one (any one) from that time frame, please?
If picture is larger than 1 megabit (forums limit) – then you can email me a copy of it.

Thank you in advance,
BudW

Thanks BudW. I was really excited and pleased to find the build sheet and also with the condition of the floors. I had thought others on the forum would be interested too...

Sure, I have the one out of the Black '77 Volare Oklahoma parts car too which is in better shape. I'll see if I can scan them.

will it be ready for Carlisle?
Doubt it. No more time off. Thanks for asking though.

I wonder how they ever got them in there at the factory?
I need to remove my 1-piece headliner from car to fix a roof rain water leak (I “think” someone missed a roof rack screw and made a new hole when car was built – but not sure exactly).

The factory has a tool used so 1-person can install the complete dash as an assembly (not so much on FMJ vehicles), for installing bench seats and for our super long headliners. A similar tool is also used for installing windshields and other long sections of glass. I looked online for photos – but couldn’t find one. on Wagons (and cars) they go in from front or rear). On cars, the glass gets installed after headliner.

The earlier ones were two piece, but I think in '78 and after, they were just one single huge piece of board
I don't think I've ever paid any attention to this aspect before.
All I can do is provide pictures of my '77 - which a production date of 11-1976 - which has a 1-piece headliner.

Thanks for the carpet pictures.
I was thinking there was a major color difference – but come to find out, I just needed to clean my glasses . . .

I need to change carpet(s) in my car as well – but wanted to do that closer to the 5 or 6-speed manual install.

No, the color is a very good match to the original. It is called "Nutmeg" and is number "8296". Now I have some figuring to do to make this work for a 4 speed wagon. I also have a few issues with the carpet itself, and I am not sure yet what I am going to about it.

I notice from your pics that your '77 has the loop carpet, and my '78 has the "cut pile" short shag. Stock Interiors sells both, but doesn't list the loop carpet for the F's, so you might have to go with the "cut pile" shag type carpet. The one that seems to match yours most closely I think would be number "8643" "Powder Blue". I sent for their free samples before I made my decision.

I’m glad someone else noticed that.
Loop carpet doesn’t seam to be correct for what I’ve read – but that is what was installed in my car.

The ’76 parts manual gives the same options as my ’77 parts manual shows (but different part numbers).
My ’77 parts manual shows:
77 PM pg 23-7a.JPG

77 PM pg 23-7b.JPG

77 PM pg 23-8a.JPG

77 PM pg 23-8b.JPG

I see "Pile" and "Shag", but no "Loop" mentioned.

Being my car is a low end car (but with rear carpet, cargo doors and defroster grid on back glass installed) makes we wonder about things, including the carpet.

Carpet needs replaced – but not as bad as yours does.
I have that on my “5-year” list of things to do.

I thought pile was loop and then the more plush was cut pile.

My 76 had black loop and I put in cut pile, very nice for a race car.

I’m no expert on carpet and it appears Google doesn’t give a quick answer.
It “appears” the different types are:
Loop (think ‘60’s/early ‘70’s – no exposed ends)
Pile (exposed ends are cut)
Shag (exposed ends are cut longer)

https://www.stockinteriors.com/AutoCarpet.asp?Itemid=10785&ModelId=372#details_box_holder
Gives three choices for carpet material:
Plush Cut Pile
Ultra-Plush Cut Pile
Neon Cut Pile (Neon? Um, not for me).

For giggles, I looked up a ’66-70 B-Body carpet https://www.stockinteriors.com/AutoCarpet.asp?Itemid=10654&ModelId=349 and options are: (from their website).

Ultra Plush Pile.JPG

80-20 Loop.JPG

Last two options look like my carpet.
Not really sure what difference is in last two options (nor care too).

To be honest, I prefer the loop appearance. Not sure which style holds up better nor looks better long term, though.

I think the term "pile" might mean what we are calling loop, and the "shag" might mean the cut pile. What I ordered from Stock Interiors was the "plush cut pile" as the carpet for F's doesn't come in the Ultra Plush or Neon, not that I would want them anyway.
My two '76 F's both had the loop type carpet, and I think the '77's did too. My 4 speed '76 Volare wagon had black carpet although the interior was caramel colored. I think all first year four speeds came with black carpet only.
My '78 Aspen SE T-top had cut pile, but it was longer and more "shag-like" than the cut pile in my '78 Aspen wagon.
Being my car is a low end car (but with rear carpet, cargo doors and defroster grid on back glass installed) makes we wonder about things, including the carpet.
Do you have the mid-grade vinyl seats, or the buttoned basic seats? If not the mid-grade seats, then whoever ordered your car, must have specially ordered carpet for the rear cargo area. Maybe it was part of a package? There seems to be so many variations of options on all years of the F's. Thats why the build sheets are interesting and useful to see what the cars originally came with.

Back then I think Chrysler put on a car what they had on hand.
I have seen a Dodge with Chrysler Doors on the RT side, trim, emblems, door panels. Brand new car!!!!

I also said

I can't comment further (while shrugging) – which is why I pulled up another link at that web site, which gave more options.

It might come down to party A says one thing and Party B says it different (but referring to the same). IDK.

Edit: I’m amazed on the F-body seat options for ’77.
My seat is the bottom picture (looks different with another color cover).

Yes. That is the base interior for the wagons, which all had vinyl seats standard for base wagons. Same as all wagons had standard power brakes. That pic is the same color and design that was in OY. Our seats are the same except for color, and that same design and material was used from '76 through '78. Beginning in '79, they used a smooth vinyl with no buttons and a cleaner design. Your seats look to be in much better shape than OY's, but I still think that your carpeted cargo area was specially ordered. Have you ever found the build sheet? It might be worth it to take out the front seat and some trim to pull up your carpet and see if it is there. I was surprised how simple and quick it was to do it. I'm looking forward to the 60/40's which are more comfortable and has the pull down armrest, but everything is on hold now while I deal with ACC about a few problems with the carpet I received. Hoping it will work out well and I can move ahead this weekend. I've also made some progress in finding sound deadening material to use in the doors, so I hope to get the new plaid door panels on this weekend.

Wow, this is weird. Now there is at least three different variations of the headliner in wagons. Yours is indeed the long uninterrupted one piece. I've also seen ones that are two piece, with a metal support trim piece about an inch or two wide covering the seam. I'm not sure anymore if that is on older or newer wagons. Then, there is the one piece with molded ridges, presumably for support going across the middle, which is the type in OY below:

Just a thought... I wonder if the two piece headliners might have been used in the upgraded interiors that have the second overhead rear cargo light? Anyone out there have one to confirm?

I found a headliner in this car https://www.forfmjbodiesonly.com/classicmopar/threads/80-aspen-wagon.5163/#post-56800 a couple of years ago – but car got crushed before I could extract it. The other problem I would have had is finding a way to transport it without damage, if I had removed it.
20160429_112045.jpg

This headliner has two ribs and is a 1-piece design – but that was two years ago (so can’t remember exactly). This had two dome lamps and rear section was torn/ripped and sagging bad.
My plan was to use this one to replace the headliner in my ’86 Fifth Ave (which is still missing its headliner . . .).

Other items I wanted from this car was the chrome bullet remote mirrors and the tailgate (with deflector and wiper). Someone else grabbed the mirrors, cutting the cables and ruining both doors in the process.

Items I did grab from car was rear differential and grill (both went to another forum member here), evaporator core and most of dash. A couple of other items – but can’t remember what.

The carpet in my wagon will be replaced in next five years or sooner (when I install a manual transmission) – but not eager to take on that battle, yet.

I have found a three-inch triangle of the build sheet under the dash cover. The triangle was taped on and someone ripped the remainder off.
There might be a copy of it under driver’s seat or under carpet – but I’m doubt it (not holding my breath to find out). If there was one under the carpet – it would not be legible anymore sense I’ve flooded the front floorboard a few times so far (from heavy rain and cowl vents not draining water well). All areas have been searched, except for on top of headliner (which I've not seen one there, before) or areas mentioned earlier.
