This is a muffler question.

I had to replace the radiator this year (2019) in the backhoe since the original one was leaking like a maniac.

As I continue my search for the upper and lower radiator hoses, I was wondering about the muffler. The top 'collar'? has rusted down until it is flat with the top of the muffler and doesn't reach up to the bottom of the stack.

New mufflers are couple hundred dollars.

I don't run the backhoe too often, but plan to keep it another 8 years or so.

Is rehabbing a muffler something I should consider?

Rehabbing a muffler ... is that just 1) find something to make a collar out of so it will read the bottom of the stack and 2) do I chemically treat or burn or what the interior of the muffler?

Don't you love my ignorance?

Just another challenge.

Just made the part and burned it together.
It probably depends on how much you have left of the part to work with.

Bought a new muffler and installed.
Then fought electric gremlins.

Turns out dad put a shut off switch on the backhoe because the batteries would drain down after 2 days.
He never tried to fix the electric subsystem that was causing problem... just got a 'bigger hammer' and put in a cut off switch to the battery.

Which, of course, is made so much better by the nearly 1/2 roll of black electrical tape he used to be sure it didn't get water on the connections.

The corrosion and rust under the black electrical tape was an amazing site to behold.

Got all that sorted out and jumped the battery... backhoe started right up (after priming the fuel pump).

Fixed the leaking radiator with the replacement... standing there in awe...when my brother notices the water leaking from the front of the engine (behind the fan).

Dang it.

Me thinks a water pump needs to be replaced now.

It is...

I was looking at the backhoe watching the green coolant drain out of the bottom of the engine and started chuckling...
The rim on the driverside is missing 3 (count em-- three) studs and lugnuts.

3 of 8 are missing.

I could just move some from the rim on the other side and fix it right up!
(but wait, that's an Aggie joke or a Dumb Blonde joke isn't it?)

Yesterday ...
I replaced the water pump on the backhoe.
Turns out it had an engine replacement in its lifetime and it has a Chevy 350 block engine in it.

So I could buy O'Reilly parts at about 1/3 the price of Case parts.

Once I got the pump back in I realized there is only 1 more thing to check before I would have replaced everything regarding radiator/cooling.

Thermostat.

It was toast.

This now makes the 3rd water pump I've done since I joined this forum.

And this 580K Case Backhoe

I never dreamed my chrysler skills would come in so handy.

You are the water pump Queen! Too bad they didn't put a Chrysler engine in the Case instead of the Chevy;)

Now we know why the lug nuts had come off, they were trying to escape from the Chevy powered Case.

it gets better.

Today I went down to put the inlet port back on after soaking and cleaning it.
Replaced the thermostat while I was at it.

Last thing to do is the belt.

Oh My Freaking Frack....
It has a tensioner pulley -- check, I moved it and pulled the belt away.
I took the alternator loose so I could get behind it and pull the belt away.

Then you are supposed to release 4 nuts, locking washers, and cover caps-- pull the bottom pulley toward the hydraulic pump, away from the crankshaft, and thread the old belt out and the new one in.

Then reverse everything.

Well it is exceptionally humid and I have my own chores to do. Need to pull cardboard out for this and its supposed to rain.

Bleh.

Not today.
