Still picking away.

Ran out of money for the stock car as of now so It's been put on hold and sadly will not be run this season.

Currently finishing up the brakes right now and installing new steering components.

That is so awesome!!!!

Well got some more work done on the car tonight.

Finished prepping the 11.75" rotors, packed the bearings and installed them on the car.

I also made some minor modifications to them, I drilled and tapped two small holes into the face of the rotor hub about 1/2" deep.

Then using pieces of hose clamp I salvaged from some old radiant heater couplers the neighbors at work threw away in our metal bin I made some straps.

Then using two stainless steel #10 machine screws I fastened the straps to the rotor.

I'm hoping this will keep the bearing caps from popping off, we just tack welded them on the shop's stock car but I was hoping to devise a way that is easy to remove and reinstall without welder.

Finally after having some minor difficulty with sourcing parts I finally was able to get the front brakes assembled.

Calipers, pads and stainless hoses.

When I built my Mirada I got rid of the stock "slider" alignment system by welding a piece of angle iron then used a shim set up like the GM's. Worked good!

Love the old Mirada. Pavement car? How did it run? :toothy12:

The caliper brackets I'm using are from a '75-'77 Cordoba and the pads and calipers are for a '72-'74 Challenger. All direct bolt on readily available parts store parts.

I wanted simple, durable and easy to replace and readily available. :)

No I meant a piece of angle iron to bolt the cross shaft for the upper control arm to, so the alignment could stay more stable. I built that car in 88 & it was the newest car on the track, I still have it & now I could run Nostalgia class! Ran on 1/2 mile dirt. Was pretty good but those little light Malibu's were pretty hard to touch!

Oh ok! I got yah now.

Never had any problem with the UCA moving after it's been tightened down.

Yeah the M and J body cars we run at our track in the Thunder Car Class are the smallest out there. Rules limit wheelbase to 112.5" so there are no X or G body GM stuff in our class.

They all race in the Street Stock class which has a minimum wheelbase of 108" to keep Mustangs out.

You mentioned all the parts are readily available at the parts store. Does that include the caliper brackets? I thought since those aren't a wear item, they wouldn't be available and a wrecking yard was the only option. If they are still available, is there any chance you could let me know where and maybe a part number? Thanks.

Steve2961:

The slider caliper adapter brackets are P/N 3880839. The 11.75" rotors are P/N 4126545. Both were standard on big block 75-78 Cordobas, Chargers, and Magnums. They were also standard on the 79-81 R body cars (Dodge St. Regis, Chrysler Newport & New Yorker, Plymouth Gran Fury). The calipers and pads from our J-Bodies are the same, and will bolt up to the caliper adapters. I have been trying to find a pair of these caliper adapter brackets for a while, with no success. As far as I have been able to determine, the caliper adapter brackets are not available new anywhere (either factory or third party), so junk yard or vintage parts dealers (I was quoted $150/pair, plus $80 in shipping (I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada)) are the only sources. Rotors are available anywhere; pads are, too.

I've gotten all of mine from junk yards out here. They are cheap when I bought them, like $20 a set.

The ones on my stock car came from a '76 Cordoba with a 360 2bbl.

That was a great score. I haven't even seen any Mopars earlier than '82 around here (was a gold coloured Cordoba from earlier this spring), and usually the oldest stuff is a '85 Fifth Ave. early '90s trucks are getting harder to find, even.

Did some more work today.

In the middle of rebuilding the engine for my Geo Metro to have it ready for when I got to school so progress has been slow.

Got the seat and steering column installed.

With quick detach wheel.

The plastic dust shield is the lid that held the hardener on a can of Bondo. :D

I would have finished the steering column install but my intermediate shaft is kinda screwed and it's the only one I have here in town, so off to the farm I go.
